The Loom

Lydia is a plantation slave with cream-colored skin and green eyes. Growing up, she’s transfixed by the stories and Christian wisdom of the elderly slaves who work in the “loom room.” Later, as an adult, she discovers that she can pass for white. Leaving behind John, the slave she loves, Lydia makes a desperate bid for freedom....

Years have passed and “Caroline” is the wife of a Maryland plantation owner. One day, a seven-year-old slave named Sadie arrives on the plantation with her father. After Sadie’s father is sold, the young girl finds solace in the loom room. But Caroline hides a secret about Sadie’s past—and her own identity—that endangers them both.

Faith, family and forgiveness intertwine in Shella Gillus’ inspiring debut.

Just received book in the mail to read and wanted to check the reviews. Please just give your opinion and not tell the story.

Excellent Book!
May 01, 2012

I think this book is a wonderful read. It requires the reader to place his/herself in the story and visualize - perhaps even imagine what is taking place without the author feeding us every single morsel. I believe I read that this is the author's first book - and she did well. I enjoyed the story and the ending with her remaining true to herself and her heritage. There were a few holes that could be plugged going forward, but I like the tasteful and delicate way the book was written. The more graphic books and writings don't allow people to imagine and become part of the story while reading. This was good and I have no doubt that the author will only get better and better. Sister Author, Go with your heart and your style of writing, Sister ... I encourage and uplift you for pulling out what God gifted you with! Prosper and Be Blessed!!!

Very very confusing
February 11, 2012

The story line advertised is some what different from the actual story. The book was all over the place and at time very confusing. I agree with Stepahnie's comments however, I do not agree with telling the story.

Did not enjoy at all

Storyline too mixed, jumped from one thing to another without ending anything.
